Ice Castle - Saranac Lake

Candy and I visited the ice castle in Saranac Lake on Sunday. We were driving by on our way to Mineville and I asked her if she had ever seen it. She had never seen or heard about it, so it was exciting to see her reaction to it. I've always enjoyed seeing it, and haven't done so as much as I want. We took the time and braved the cold night to walk all around. I was amazed by it's architecture and the ambition it must take one to be willing to handle those huge blocks of ice every year! It also made me thankful we had a warm vehicle to run to when we felt nearly as frozen as the castle.

A little history:

The castle is part of Saranac Lake's annual Winter Carnival, and a different one is built each year. You can walk through the front door and sit on an ice throne inside (which Candy did - crazy girl sitting on ice!). It's about three stories high, each ice block is about two feet long, and probably weighs about a hundred pounds. There was a maze and a pirates ship this year, and those were fun to walk through.

You can watch the video, or if you're in the area - it's beautiful to see at night!
