Daycation

Sunday, Candy and I traveled to Lake Placid to enjoy some “mother/daughter” time together. Our first stop was Whiteface Mountain, where we rode on the Cloudsplitter Gondola. It travels to the top of Little Whiteface and offered us a view of the ski trails, wooded areas, and the AuSable River. Admittedly, I’m slightly afraid of heights (or more accurately the fear of falling) – and our thoughts on the ride to the top were “wow, it just keeps going up doesn’t it?”

Candy was more brave than I was, and stood up for a little while.

We made it to the top, where a man saw us struggling to take a picture of ourselves as well as incorporate the view, and offered to take one for us. Thanks, nameless man.

Candy climbed to the very top...

...and then we enjoyed the view on the way down.

Our next adventure was an eight-mile climb on the Veterans Memorial Highway, ascending to the summit of the fifth highest mountain in the Adirondacks. The last five miles were the most spectacular as the road winds upward through a changing forest and an alpine summit environment. The road was certainly rough in spots, and there were a few times I thought my Focus was going to fall in one and not get out without losing a few parts.

At the summit, something you don’t often find atop a peak: a castle built from native stone.

Maybe it's because it's such a trek to the top, or maybe it's because soda isn't indigenous to castles...either way, I would recommend purchasing beverages elsewhere. Grand total: $6.50

Another thing you don't often find on a mountain is an elevator IN the mountain. After walking about 500 feet through a dark tunnel, we came to the elevator that took us the 26 stories up to the top. It was quite chilly in there - about 40 degrees, but I found it a nice change to the dreadfully hot temperatures we'd been experiencing lately.

The peak offers a truly spectacular 360 degree, panoramic view of unparalled beauty that could only be created by an amazingly creative and powerful God.

And once again, Candy made the climb to the top.

The way down was not quite as easy as the way up. The Summit Nature Trail is only 1/5 of a mile - but it's not a smooth road. We maneuvered boulders, scaled rocks, and avoided the avalance areas.

It was quite the hike, but it was a lot of fun and much more scenic than the elevator. I'll be ready to do it again in another five years or so. :)

We went from the top of the mountain to the bottom, and enjoyed a few brief moments by the river.

Oh...and hung out with some of the locals.

When we got back into town, we treated ourselves to Starbucks! Incidently, it cost less than a dollar more than the two sodas we purchased earlier.

After browsing through some of the shops, we went to the evening worship service at Lake Placid Baptist Church. There were seven of us total (and we were all visitors except Pastor Derek) - including a couple who were visiting from the Netherlands!

We ate dinner a a cute little restaurant settled right on Mirror Lake.

Candy thought our waiter was cute, and I'm guessing she wanted his number.

To conclude our "daycation", we went miniature golfing at Pirate's Cove. Proving there are no winners or losers in this relationship - we tied at 56.
